A bright spot in our first 5 day week since break

So ever since I figured out the version I knew of a song that my colleague taught to our kids this week it's been running though my head. I'll be that a lot of people haven't thought of it for a long time but will remember it too:
If all of the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops
oh what a rain it would be.
I'd stand outside with my mouth open wide
Euh, euh, euh, euh, euh [mouth open wide with tongue out]
all the time...
And no, don't blame me when it gets stuck in your head too.

This isn't a post about children's songs though. What brought this on is that her version is "If all of the snowflakes were ___________ and ___________ oh what a snow it would be.

Snow? Yes, Snow!!!! And that's only using part of the excitement that was in the voices of my kids as we watched the first tentative few snowflakes float down from the sky. It was a warm sunny day the first time they came floating down looking more like wayward ash from a camp fire than snow flakes. I even did something unprecedented- I let them add a new square for snowy weather to our weather graph (usually what the weather when we check in the morning sticks for the day otherwise we'd be adding to it constantly). As is was actually quite warm we also let the kids go outside for a few minutes to run around in it; not knowing when or if we would have snow again.

That was the week before last. This week we had another day with very light snow prompting my colleague to choose to teach this song for our joint circle time on Friday. Little did she know that the snow would continued all chilly night and that we would wake up Friday to find it on the ground, on top of cars, in the trees, all the regular places. It was also in the playground much to our kids delight. They could hardly contain themselves. I'm not sure how often there is snow here as last year we only had a very few flakes. So unless the kids go away to somewhere snowy (Nagano and Hokkaido being popular spots) they don't see it.

Well, if it's not cold enough to snow than it's warm enough to melt snow. Furthermore our playground timeslot is after the Grade 1s and 2s so even if it did last it would be gone by the time we got out to the playground. Fortunately our parents dress their kids sensibly for the weather so at 8:30 before anyone had time to take off their coats we just told them to drop their bags so we could go out to play in it. Okay, okay, so it wasn't fair to the 1s and 2s if indeed the snow could have lasted till 11 am but you've got to take these opportunities as they arise. If they hadn't gone outside before school that morning when else would they have gotten the chance?

So it was with great glee that that they abandoned their bags and ran to the playground and got to work making their mark in the snow and throwing snowballs. There was even one shallow snow angel and one small (10 cm) snowman!

In the end it was a good thing we went out when did as of course by the time lunch recess came around it was all gone.
